CELEBRATION OF THE 600TH ANNIVERSARY
OF THE KOPORIN MONASTERY

His Holiness Pavle - Serbian Patriarch together with Their Eminences: Nikolaj - Metropolitan of Dabro/Bosnia, Jovan - Metropolitan of Veles/Povardarje and Their Graces: Vasilije - Bishop of Zvornik/Tuzla, Georgije - Bishop of Canada, Pahomije - Bishop of Vranje, Ignjatije - Bishop of Branicevo (the host of the celebration) and Grigorije - Bishop of Zahumlje/Herzegovina and in the presence of Bishop of Backa Irinej served the Holy Hierarchal Liturgy in the Monastery of Koporin, near Smederevska Palanka, thus marking the 600th anniversary of this endowment of the Saint Despot Stefan Visoki Lazarevic.

The celebration of this important jubilee, attended by a multitude of the faithful, started yesterday in the evening, by solemn vigils, cultural-artistic performance and projection of a documentary film on the history and importance of the Monastery.

The Monastery (in which the relics of the Saint Despot Stefan Lazarevic - the founder of the Monastery - have been kept as of 1989) was built in 1402 after the Angora battle. It belongs to the tradition of the late period of the Moravska School Art Style. The Monastery was frescoed. The most important frescoes are the portrait of Saint Stefan Visoki (presumably made while he was alive) and the compositions Descent to Hades, Baptism and Judas' Betrayal, which surely testify that the best painters made them.

It should be pointed out that this is the first Holy Liturgy that His Eminence Jovan - Metropolitan of Veles/Povardarje served together with His Holiness Pavle - Serbian Patriarch and hierarchs of the Serbian Orthodox Church, upon abandoning the state of schism and uniting with One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Orthodox Church of Christ.
