FIVE CENTURIES OF THE KRUSEDOL MONASTERY

The Monastery of Krusedol, located at Fruska gora, the most important Serbian monastery north to the Sava and the Danube, last week marked two jubilees: five centuries since the monastery foundations were set and its feast Venerable Mother Angelina. His Eminence Vasilije, Bishop of Srem, served the Holy Hierarchal Liturgy in the presence of several hundreds of the faithful.

In the beginning of the XVI century Angelina Brankovic, wife of the Serbian despot Stefan, founded this Monastery together with her son, Bishop Maksim. This Monastery is the place of the final repose of many notable Serbian people: Serbian Patriarchs – Arsenije III Carnojevic and Arsenije IV Sakabenta; Prince Milos Obrenovic’s wife – Princess Ljubica; the first duke of the Serbian Dukedom – Stevan Supljikac; and King Milan Obrenovic were buried there. During the construction of the Monastery Angelina Brankovic took monastic vows. The Serbian Orthodox Church included her into the saints and celebrates her feast on August 12.

This year the godfather of the feast was Mr Vlajko Vujic from Valjevo.

Six nuns and two monastics dedicated to faith live in the Monastery at present. The Monastery is 4 km away from the old road Belgrade-Novi Sad.
