NEWS FROM THE ORTHODOX CHURCH OF GREECE

A symposium Family in the Third Millennium was held in Athens on September 19 and 20, 2002. It was organised by the Centre for Reinforcing Family Ties, under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Athens.

His Beatitude Christodoulos, Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, President of the Centre for Reinforcing Family Ties, opened the symposium on September 19, by delivering a lecture on Problems of Greek Family. Greek Minister of Education and Church Issues P. Ephtimiu and the social worker Bonny Miller took part in the opening with their lectures. Mr Miller spoke about the Illegal Trade in Women in South-East Europe and Consequences of Such Trade on Family.

The agenda included the following topics: Family and European Politics, Demographic Problem – Problem No. 1 of the Greek People, Violence within Family, Morality and Family, Family in Exile etc.

The participants in the symposium were renown representatives of Greek and European Parliaments, Greek government, local autonomous bodies, hierarchs and clergymen, judges, teachers, writers, journalists and representatives of non-governmental bodies.
