SCARING SERBIAN RETURNEES

In the immediate vicinity of Serbian returnees, in the village of Belo Polje near Pec, unknown persons started shooting from automatic weapons at the Serbs who were cleaning up the debris of one of their burned houses.

Radomir Kostic, Arandjel Arsenijevic, Davor Popovic and Zivko Bozic went to see the house of Radomir Kostic close to the improvised returnees camp in the village of Belo Polje near Pec. As they were clearing up the debris unknown persons started shooting from automatic weapons at them in order to scare them.

The Serbs returned to their camp immediately, and Italian KFOR units went to the scene. The investigation continues.

This is the first try of intimidation of the Serbian returnees in this village near Pec. The group of 25 returnees came back to the remains of their burnt houses on July 14, 2003 with the intention to renovate the houses. Italian KFOR units protect the village by their movable patrols. Fixed checkpoints have not been established so as “not to provoke the local Albanians”, KFOR representatives say.
