TOMBSTONES DESTROYED AND
ORTHODOX GRAVEYARD DESACRATED AT MARTONOS

Orthodox graveyard at Martonos in the north of Backa does not look the way it looked up to July this year. At the beginning of this month, twelve tombstones were destroyed and desecrated. Orthodox population is a minority one in this little town, but up to the present moment, there have not happened any similar occurrences.

This brutal act of the criminals who have been found (as reported by the parish center at Martonos, but without official statement of the Kanji police department) has upset the Orthodox faithful in this part of Backa.

The tombstones of the following families were destroyed: Stevka and Vaso Sibalic, Milka and Ilija Bajic, Jagica and Toso Congradac, Mara and Aleksandar Nedeljkov, Rakila and Velimir Congradac, Mara and Milan Marica, Persida Bandin; while tombstones of the following deceased were desecrated: Zagorka Pocuca (refugee), Aleksa Okovacki, Draga and Geno Bandin, Nada Todorov (refugee) and Ester Kojic. Stone and wooden crosses were demolished, embellishing fences torn apart and vases broken.

Each vandal act causes shock and condemnation, but a question inevitably arises: if the deceased can’t rest in peace, how will the alive’s human rights be observed?
