EXHIBITION OF BYZANTINE ICONS
BY ICON
PAINTER SOLRUNN NES FROM NORWAY
On Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. in the Djuro Jaksic House,
Skadarska Street no. 34, the first exhibition of icons by icon
painter Solrunn Nes of Norway will open entitled “A View of the
(Holy) Light”.
The exhibition will be open until June 20, 2005. It will be
opened by Archbishop Stanislav Hocevar of Belgrade. Speakers
will include the Norwegian Deputy Ambassador, Mr. Sverre Johan
Kvale, and Presbyter Vlada Vukasinovic.
Ms. Nes will be giving a lecture in the English language on
the iconography of medieval Norway on Monday, June 6, at 8:00
p.m.
From the catalog: We are extremely grateful to painter Solrunn
Nes for this pleasant surprise. It is a truly a revelation to
see icons coming to us from the northwest of Europe painted in
the tradition of the Orthodox Church. Here in Serbia, where such
icon painting has been nurtured for centuries, we have not yet
had the opportunity to see the fruits of such a deep and authentic
interest in iconography in Norway. Like in Norway, interest in
“theology in colors” is growing in other countries throughout
the world. This attests to the process of growing closer and
opening new horizons, getting to know those different from us
through dialogue. Especially great interest has been noted in
Roman Catholic settings.
Icon
painter and art historian Solrunn has been inspired by Byzantine
art for the past two decades. She lives and works in
Bergen on the west coast of Norway. She has had exhibitions throughout
her own country and Western Europe as well as in Australia and
Asia. This is her first exhibition in the Balkans.
