JACQUES FORTIER IS THE EUROPEAN RELIGION WRITER OF THE YEAR

Mr. Jacques Fortier, religion writer for the Strasbourg based daily newspaper "Dernieres Nouvelles d`Alsace" (France), has been named the winner of the 2003 John Templeton award for the "European Religion Writer of the Year". The announcement of the award, which is valued at 5,000 Swiss Francs, was made today in Geneva, Switzerland, by the Office of Communication of the Conference of European Churches (CEC), which administers the award on behalf of the USA based "John Templeton Foundation". The prize will be presented on Tuesday 29 June at 7 p.m. in Strasbourg, at the CEC Church and Society Commission office at 8, rue du Fosse des Treize. The aim of the award is to honor journalists who write about religion in the secular press with accuracy, impartiality and with an ecumenical spirit.

Mr. Fortier is the third prize winner from a French language publication, after Alain Dupraz, "La Tribune de Geneve", Switzerland, 1999 award; and Henri Tincq "Le Monde", Paris, 2001 award. The winner of the 2002 award was Agneta Lagercrantz from the Swedish paper "Svenska Dagbladet".

5,000-EURO PRIZE OFFERED FOR BEST ARTICLE ON CLASSICAL LANGUAGES

The Pontifical Committee of Historical Sciences has announced a journalistic prize to promote the teaching and study of Latin and Greek. An award of 5,000 euros will go to articles published in newspapers and reviews that show how these two languages have had a decisive role for the scientific and cultural development of Europe and the West in general.

To be eligible for the competition, articles must be published between now and Dec. 31. Authors entering the competition must send six copies of their newspaper or review article to the Secretariat of the Pontifical Committee of Historical Sciences (at Piazza Pio XII 3, 00120 Vatican City).

Monsignor Walter Brandmuller, president of the pontifical committee, said that the competition responds "to the progressive abandonment of the study" of the classical languages, in particular, Latin. The main objective is "to recover Latin as a language and instrument of knowledge," he said. This language is necessary to study the ancient and modern history of the world, "when Latin was, so to speak, the international language of political, economic and cultural relations," the monsignor added.

MILESEVO HAYMAKING 2004

The brotherhood of the monastery of Milesevo is once again organizing the already traditional annual mowing of the monastery fields. The mowers’ competition will take place on Saturday, June 26, 2004 and the mowing will begin at 7:00 a.m. The program consists of three parts: the community haymaking event, the mowers’ competition and the mowers’ competition using mowers. The winners will be announced and prizes awarded at 6:30 p.m. In addition to the competition, the program includes a popular entertainment section to include participation by folklore groups, singers of authentic songs and gusle players/folk singers. On Tuesday, June 29, 2004, a community hay gathering will be held.
