EXHIBITION
OF WORKS BY STUDENTS OF THE ACADEMY OF ARTS AND CONSERVATION OPENS
IN ZEMUN
The
dean of the Academy of Arts and Conservation of the Theological
Faculty of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Protopresbyter Dr. Radomir
Popovic, opened an exhibition of icons painted by the students
of the Academy at the Stara Kapetanija Gallery in Zemun on July
20, 2004. In his address to guests the dean emphasized that the
Academy has been open for ten full years and that this exhibition
is the third in a series of exhibitions of student works in less
than two months in 2004. The Academy works according to the liturgical
principle of “come and see” and does not wish to promote itself.
Saying
that the icons represented a vision of the divine heavens in the
direction of the Lord God, the dean officially opened the exhibition,
which will continue until July 30. In addition to numerous religious
art afficionados, the opening was also attended by Hieromonk Irinej
Dobrijevic, consultant to the Holy Synod of Bishops and editor
of the Information Service of the Serbian Orthodox Church; Protopresbyter
Dr. Radovan Bigovic, a
professor from the Theological Faculty of the Serbian Orthodox
Church; and professors from the Academy of Arts and Conservation
of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
The
exhibition includes works created by the students during the course
of the 2003/04 academic year. In addition to icons painted on
wood and textiles, it also includes mosaics and photographic documentation
of conservation works and student fresco paintings in the churches
in Golubac, Peroj and Hajducica Monastery.

CITY
OF PROKUPLJE CELEBRATES PATRON SAINT’S DAY
The Municipal
Assembly of Prokuplje and the church of St. Prokopios are jointly
celebrating their patron saint’s day, the feast of St. Prokopios
(in Serbian, Sv. Prokopije). On this occasion His Grace Bishop
Irinej of Nis served Holy Hierarchal Liturgy in the church of
St. Prokopios, followed by the breaking of the slava cake at noon
in the municipality. In 1993 the municipality of Prokuplje resumed
celebrating the feast of its patron saint and protector of the
city, whose relics rest in the local church and after whom the
city on the Toplica River was named more than 600 years ago.
