COMMUNIQUE
OF
THE HOLY SYNOD OF BISHOPS OF
THE SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH
REGARDING THE DESTRUCTION OF
THE MONASTERY OF ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM
NEAR BITOLJ
The
Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church is shocked
and deeply saddened by the destruction of the monastery of St.
John Chrysostom (Svetoga Jovana Zlatousta) in the village of Nizepolje
near Bitolj at midnight on October 15, 2004, and considers this
to be a barbaric act of state terrorism on the part of the Government
in Skoplje, with the full collaboration of the schismatic bishops
in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
The
Holy Synod of Bishops that responsibility for this crime (the
likes of which, truly, has never occurred in Europe in a time
of peace) lies primarily with the secular authorities. The schismatic
bishops, on the other hand, are congratulating themselves that
the destruction was carried out on the basis of their requests
and objectively witnessing that, ecclesiologically, they are completely
unaccountable. They have sealed their terrible sin of schism,
that is, the destruction of the unity of the Church of Christ
and conscious deception of a large number of faithful, with openly
attacking God and the Church, like the terrorists who destroy
churches and monasteries in Kosovo and Metohija.
The Holy Synod
of Bishops again calls on the appropriate authorities in Belgrade,
first and foremost, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State
Union of Serbia and Montenegro, taking advantage of the possibilities
offered them by international law and conventions of which our
country is also a signatory, to act more decisively to protect
their citizens, citizens of Serbian nationality in FYROM and,
finally, all those Orthodox Christians in FYROM who, by God’s
justice, are persecuted solely because they are in ecumenical
and canonical unity with the Serbian Orthodox Church and all other
Orthodox Churches. It is becoming apparent that the Former Yugoslav
Republic of Macedonia, besides Kosovo and Metohija, is the only
political entity in present-day Europe whose authorities not only
discriminate against but also brutally terrorize their own citizens
and compatriots because of their affiliation with the Orthodox
Church.
The Holy Synod
of Bishops offers its full support to Metropolitan Jovan of Veles
and Povardarje and his bishops, priests, monks and nuns, and the
faithful people of the Archdiocese of Ochrid that they may endure
all persecution and trials confronting them, finding comfort in
the Lord Christ Himself, Crucified and Resurrected in our name,
Who will bring an end to their suffering and ours.
Amen! God
grant that it be so!
