ECUMENICAL
PATRIARCH ATTENDS INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON “THE CASPIAN SEA:
LINKING PEOPLE AND TRADITIONS”
His
All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople
took part in the Religion, Science and the Environment International
Symposium VI "The Caspian Sea: Linking peoples and traditions"
held at the beginning of February in Dublin. Archbishop Gregory
of Thyateira and Great Britain and Metropolitan John Ziziulas
of Pergamon visited Dublin together with His All Holiness the
Ecumenical Patriarch. During his presentation at the Symposium,
Patriarch Bartholomew also said: “We are pleased to take part
in such an important Symposium, which has brought together a large
number of eminent scientists, theologians and religious leaders.
Our task is to protect the environment, the creation of the Living
God, and to protect together all natural resources. We bear a
large responsibility because of all the pollution through which
selfish man has for centuries destroyed his environment. The Caspian
Sea, which we are discussing here today, is the witness to many
historic events and civilizations for it is located on the borders
of two continents – Europe and Asia. We must not forget that the
Indo-European languages also originated on the shores of the Caspian.
We are well aware that for years the Caspian Sea has been endangered
and soullessly utilized in various ways, that it has been exposed
to chemical pollution, and that its marine flora and fauna are
threatened. That is why the goal of this Symposium should be to
find an answer to all these challenges.”
