Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria met the President of the Republic of Zambia, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, met on Saturday, February 22.

Issues related to religious tolerance, rights of vulnerable groups, environmental protection, and gender equality were discussed during the meeting while Patriarch Theodore presented the work carried out by the Patriarchate in Zambia and Africa in general to the president.

The primate of the Patriarchate of Alexandria presented the president of Zambia with the Grand Cross of the Throne of Saint Mark the Evangelist, an honorary distinction awarded by the Patriarchate of Alexandria only to Heads of State.

Immediately after his meeting with the president of Zambia, the Patriarch of Alexandria traveled to South Zambia to visit the Vlachakis family. The historical Vlachakis family moved from Crete to Zambia in 1894 and marked the first appearance of the Greek diaspora in the sub-Saharan country.

On Sunday morning, Patriarch Theodore performed the Patriarchal Divine Liturgy, accompanied by Metropolitans Ioannis of Zambia and Daniel of Axum, at the Church of Saint Alexandros in Lusaka.
