New Greek Metropolitan of Chicago elected: Archim. Nathaniel Symeonides

The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate unanimously elected Archimandrite Nathanael Symeonides to the vacant Chicago See earlier this morning, Romfea reports.

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America falls under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Fr. Nathanel was one of 40 eligible candidates submitted to the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The Chicago See has been vacant since His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago fell asleep in the Lord on June 2 at the age of 89.

The commemoration of our Holy Father among the Saints Euthymios the Great was celebrated by the Patriarchate on Friday January 20/February 2, 2018, at the Holy Monastery dedicated to his name next to the Holy Monastery of Panagia Sayda Naya at the Christian Quarter, at a short distance from the Patriarchate.

Centenary of Bolshevik separation of Church and state marked today

Today, February 2, marks exactly 100 years from the adoption of the Bolsheviks’ main anti-Church decree, “On the Separation of the Church from the State and Schools from the Church.” This decree established and proclaimed the secular character of the governmental authorities, all civil status acts were transferred to the jurisdiction of the civil authorities, and the teaching of religious creeds and disciplines was forbidden in all educational institutions. All property existing in Russian Church and religious societies was declared national property, reports pravoslavie.ru.

Finnish Orthodox Church to honor exemplary mothers

Since 1994, the Finnish Orthodox Church under the Ecumenical Patriarchate has celebrated the achievements of the mothers among its flock. Mothers who have served the work of the Church in various ways, by educating, guiding, supporting and participating are annually awarded. All of the recipients are women who have their Orthodox faith at the center of their lives.
