First SerbFest in Canton
On Saturday, August 29th, the St George Serbian Orthodox community hosted their first-ever Serbian Festival. Starting with offering fresh ‘krofne’ and ‘palacinke’ at 10am, the doors remained open until 9:30pm.
Visitors were greeted at the door with a showcase of traditional Serbian items and ethnic treasures. As the day progressed, the community shared our culture heritage in the form of faith, food, music, dance and hospitality.
The main hall was the focal point of all activities. The kitchen prepared 800 sarma and sold 14 freshly roasted lambs. Homemade desserts, Serbian potato salad, rice, chicken, and Cevapi were available for our patrons, along with countless desserts. As people consumed their food, they were able to enjoy live music by the popular band “Sarena” throughout the afternoon and evening. Around 5pm, dancers from St Archangel Michael Serbian Orthodox Church put on a wonderful hour-long kolo dance performance.
In the lounge, the “Little Serbia Marketplace” welcomed 13 vendor tables selling a variety of goods from fresh chocolates, to icons, jewelry and more. Serbian music from the Kosovo Men’s Choir played in the market throughout the day.
At the picnic grounds, and in the adjacent fields, the “Children’s Area” featured two bouncy houses, pony rides, balloon artist, games, snow-cones, popcorn, face-painting and more.
Church tours were offered periodically throughout the day. Curious visitors were introduced to Orthodox art and architecture, and offered a chance to ask questions. All who came on the tour delighted in the beautiful iconography and architecture of St George Serbian Orthodox Church.
Throughout the course of the day St George extended their hospitality to around 2000 people who came to the festival. The parish community gathered in full-force to support and staff this event. From our youngest stewards, to those who were founding members, every person offered their time, talent, and energy to help ensure that this first “SerbFest” would be a successful one. Many members invited their friends and family to volunteer their time as well. Many thanks to everyone who made this event a success!
