Orthodox dioceses responding to northern CA wildfires

Wildfires continue to spread quickly throughout northern California’s wine country. Latest reports say 23 people have already been killed, and another 285 are missing. 170,000 acres have been consumed, with 3,500 structures thus far destroyed. More than 20,000 people have been ordered to evacuate, including the city of Calistoga, and parts of Geyserville. At least 8,000 firefighters from California and other western states are bravely and tirelessly working to contain the fires.

Greek Church spent $147 million on charity, social services in 2016

Meeting in its second session of the month yesterday under the presidency of His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens, the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church heard a report detailing that the Church spent more than $147 million on its social welfare and charity ministry works in 2016, Romfea reports.

Orthodoxy growing in Uzbekistan

There are a growing number of Orthodox Christians in Uzbekistan, despite the dwindling of the Russian-speaking population, Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev) of Volokolamsk stated recently.

Speaking on television program “The Church and the World” on Saturday, His Eminence stated, “The Orthodox are not becoming smaller, because there is a very active parallel work being done on the catechetical and religious education of the people. That is, the Russian-speaking population has decreased, but the number of Orthodox is growing anyways,” reports Interfax-Religion.

Eight saints who connect us with Syria

Greek Archdiocese publishes prayer book and Liturgy in braille

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America recently published three books in braille for the benefit of blind Orthodox Christians. The books, Speaking to God by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Geron of America, My Orthodox Prayer Book, and The Divine Liturgy of St. Chrysostom, went on sale yesterday on the archdiocese’s Orthodox Marketplace.
