Artist - Serbian Academy members
On the occasion of the 170th anniversary of the foundation of the Society of Serbian Letters, the predecessor of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, a big exhibition of works of artists who were Academy members was opened on November 18. The exhibition includes works by painters and sculptors who were members of the Academy and its preceding institutions throughout history (Society of Serbian Letters, Serbian Learned Society, Serbian Royal Academy) from painters Steva Todorović and Đoka Milovanović, to artists that are active even today - Olga Jevrić, Vladimir Veličković, Ljubomir Ljuba Popović, Svetomir Arsić Basara, Petar Omčikus, Nikola Janković, Dušan Otašević, Tome Serafimovski, Todor Stevanović and Milica Stevanović.
The exhibits include 89 works of 50 authors. It represents a chronological survey of the Academy’s history. The works of artists are presented in the same sequence in which the authors were admitted to the Academy. The exhibition is accompanied with a catalogue, which includes texts by writer, poet and Academy member Ljubomir Simović and art historian Stanislav Živković and a study on the presence of art in the Academy ever since its foundation and on the formation of the Academy’s Art Collection. The study was written by curator Jelena Mežinski Milovanović, who is the author of this exhibition.
The Academy’s Art Collection includes some 3,000 works of art today and numerous legacies of artists, such as Olga Radović, Nedeljko Gvozdenović, Ljubica Sokić. It was formally defined in 1968–1969, when a list of the works was compiled and the collection has been enriched systematically ever since. The Art Gallery was founded in October 1968 and the collection was first presented to the public in 1982. Some of the works at this exhibition have never been seen before as they were obtained recently. Besides, this exhibition is in many respects different to those staged by the Academy so far.
The exhibition lasts through January 2012 and tours, not only through the exhibition itself, but also through Academy rooms treasuring some works that have been not included in the exhibition, will be organized.
