Rio's Christ the Redeemer, One of the Modern World's 7 Wonders, Is 80

On October 12, the same day Brazilian Catholics honored their patron saint, Nossa Senhora Aparecida (Our Lady of Aparecida), Brazil also celebrated the 80th anniversary of Rio's famous Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) statue.

"The monument is an icon of Rio de Janeiro," said Rio's Archbishop Orani João Tempesta. He said the statue "represents the Brazilian citizen: as a person who follows Jesus Christ, and welcomes others, as the monument does with its open arms."

St. Nicholas Greek-Orthodox Church To Be Rebuild at the WTC

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America officially signed an agreement today on rebuilding the church of St. Nicholas, which was destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that he, joined by Port Authority Executive Director Chris Ward, representatives of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and St. Nicholas Parish and Majority Leader Dean Skelos, signed the agreement that permits the rebuilding of the Church with a nondenominational bereavement center at the east end of Liberty Park, at 130 Liberty Street. The agreement follows a four-month independent engineering study commissioned by the Port Authority and the Archdiocese, which found that the Church could be built on the site with minor modifications to the original plan and with no impact on the World Trade Center construction schedule.

Eight decades of the Christ Saviour in Rio de Janeiro

In Rio de Janeiro the 80th anniversary of the raising of the statue of the Christ Saviour with outstretched hands, agencies reported today. 

This statue is the fifth biggest statue of Christ in the world and the symbol of the Olympic games which will be held in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.

The Patriarchate of Jerusalem condemns the desecration of the cemeteries in Ioppe

The Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the first Christian Church of the Holy Land, fostered through the centuries interfaith dialogue based on equality and mutual respect as well as supported the indiscriminate cohabitation and cooperation of the Jewish, the Christians and the Muslims.

Continuing Its conciliatory and peacekeeping mission, the Patriarchate condemns the actions of desecration, which have recently been done by an individual whose identity remains unknown to the detriment and damage of the Christian and Muslim Cemetery in Ioppe.
