Church on the border

The church of Holy Trinity, one of the greatest on the south of Serbia, near Bosilegrad, on the border with Bulgaria, eleven remaining residents of Izvor keep  in shifts. 

The department for art history of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade this year began with a detail research of the church art on the south of Serbia.

All religious buildings will be listed and a monography on them will be published. Among them there will be the church of Holy Trinity near Bosilegrad, on the very border with Bulgaria.

There is no day that Nada and Asan, besides their duties on their land they visit the church in the centre of the village. They are today the youngest residents of Izvor. 

A tradition says that the Church of Holy Trinity, with the approval of Custendil pasha, was raised by local residents in 1834.  But the pasha's approval was clearly conditioned: a base of the Orthodox building which is being raised should not exceed a surface of the skin of the biggest bull in the village.

Clever villagers cut the skin into belts and built the place of worship of an area of 700 square meters.

The last time the church was restored was fifteen years ago.
