The Council of the Estonian Orthodox Church has elected a new Primate

The Council of the Estonian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate (apcmp) on Tuesday elected rector of the Moscow theological schools the new Primate.

Chapter apcmp became Evgeny, Archbishop of verey, vicar of his Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia, the Chairman of the education Committee of the Russian Orthodox Church, rector of Moscow theological schools. The former head apcmp Cornelius was elevated to the rank of Metropolitan of Tallinn and all Estonia in November 2000. He died 19 APR 94-m to year of life. The election of a new Primate were held in the Church of Alexander Nevsky in Tallinn for 40 days after the death of Cornelius.

«New Primate apcmp Evgeny, Archbishop of verey, was elected by secret ballot by a simple majority of votes», — stated in the message published on the website apcmp.

The meeting of the Synod of the Estonian Orthodox Church took place on may 5 at the pühtitsa Dormition stavropegic convent. For the post of head apcmp claimed Archbishop Evgeny of verey and the Bishop of Narva and Prigodskiy Lazarus, acting administrator of the Estonian Orthodox Church.

According to the Charter apcmp, «the Primate of the Estonian Orthodox Church is elected by the Council of the Estonian Orthodox Church from among the candidates presented by the Synod of the Estonian Orthodox Church adopted by the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia and the Holy Synod».

The Estonian Orthodox Church has the status of a self-governing Church under the canonical jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate. It brings together two of the diocese of Tallinn and Narva. According apcmp, members of the Estonian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate consider themselves to be about 170 thousand faithful.
