Fear of Radical Islam in Syria

The Greek Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius IV Hazim Friday added its voice to that of the Maronite Patriarch Boutros Bechara Rahi, expressing his concern about the possible arrival of the "Salafis" (radical islamists) to power in Syria. 

Patriarch Ignatius, who gave an interview to radio VDL, said that today Christians of Syria are free and united. The Patriarch emphasized that his concern related to possible changes in Syria. The head of the Antiochian Orthodox Church said that he would like to see the status to be preserved as it was in last thirty years, when nothing had not been committed against the Christians.

The Christians who are minority in Syria, are not capable to influence any changes alone in the country, nor to take high positions in the leadership of Syria, explained Patriarch Ignatius, expressing his doubt regarding possible civil wars in this country. He pointed out that changes that would happen in Syria, could have consequences also for Lebanon.
