Moscow authorities announce competition for repair of Christ the Savior Cathedral

Construction work will soon be underway on Moscow’s iconic Christ the Savior Cathedral. A competition for reconstruction work on the cathedral has been announced. City authorities are taking bids to perform contracting work on the repair of the church’s stylobate and balustrade, reports RIA-Novosti.

The initial (maximum) contract price is 1.6 billion rubles ($28,144,000). Applications are being accepted until April 2, and will be considered on April 9. The work includes strengthening the exterior walls of the stylobate to better protect against leakage, a new top for it, and the repair of the granite facing of the exterior walls, and so on.

The number of employees on the project shall not exceed 100, and the duration of the work is stipulated to last 2 years, plus a half-month of preparation beforehand, reports rambler.ru.

The existing building of Christ the Savior Cathedral, built in the 1990s, is a reconstruction of the original built in the 19th century. The original was built by architect Konstantin Ton. Construction lasted 44 years, and the church was finally consecrated on May 26, 1883.
