Foundation of Church of St. Joseph the Hesychast laid in Madagascar
The foundation of a new church named in honor of the newly-glorified St. Joseph the Hesychast has been laid in the African country of Madagascar. It is perhaps the first church that will be built in honor of the great 20th-century Athonite father.
The foundation was laid by Bishop Prodromos of Toliaras and South Madagascar.
The church will serve as the catholicon of a monastery for a small, newly-formed brotherhood that is eagerly awaiting a place to carry out the ascetic life.
Patriarch Bartholomew announced the canonization of Elder Joseph (+ 1959), along with Ieronymos of Simenopetra (+ 1957), Daniel of Katounakia (+ 1929), and Ephraim of Katounakia (+ 1998), during his visit to Mt. Athos in October.
