President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic met with His Holiness, Serbian Patriarch Irinej, on December 2nd, 2019.

In a cordial and open conversation, they discussed topics of importance for the state of Serbia and the Serbian Orthodox Church. President Vucic informed His Holiness about the current political situation and the increasingly serious economic progress of Serbia, which is a result of the implemented fiscal reforms.

The interlocutors agree that more work and more unity are always necessary that will produce greater results in all the fields and will make Serbia a better and more organized state for all its citizens. His Holiness thanked the President for his personal and unselfish dedication and assistance provided by the state for the completion of works on the Saint Sava Cathedral in Belgrade.

The Patriarch informed President Vucic about the ongoing phase of the Cathedral’s final works and the desire for that memorial church to be completed and consecrated by the end of next year. President Vucic pointed out that the state would continue to help finish the works and that the completed cathedral would be one of the most recognizable symbols of Serbia.

The meeting was attended by Bishop Irinej of Backa; Bishop Stefan of Remesiana, dean of St. Sava Cathedral and Vicar of Serbian Patriarch; Secretary-General of the President of the Republic Nikola Selakovic, Head of the Cabinet of the President of the Republic Ivica Kojic and Personal Secretary of the Serbian Patriarch Dejan Nakic.
