New Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Elected

The Church of Athens and of All Greece is currently celebrating and chanting doxology in the honor of the newly elected head of the Greek Orthodox Church.

The new Archbishop of Athens and All Greece is Ieronymos, former Metropolitan of Thebes and Livadia. He was elected by 43 votes during a recent extraordinary session of the Holy Assembly of the Church of Greece.

Аrchbishop Ieronymos was born as Ioannis Liapis in 1938 in Oinofyta (Viotia). He graduated from the School of Theology of the University of Athens and completed his post-graduate studies in Germany.

He was ordained in 1967. He served as Coadjutor Metropolitan of Thebes and Livadia from 1967-78, where he was elected Metropolitan in 1981. He served as Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece for three years (1978-81).
