Foundations of Orthodoxy included in 5th-Grade Curriculum in 30 Moscow Schools

August 2015 - 11:55After a year of studying the Foundations of Orthodox Culture in the fourth grade, fifth graders of thirty Moscow schools will continue to explore the subject within the framework of a pilot project in the new school year, reported Hieromonk Onisim, the chairman of the Department of Religious Education and Catechesis of the Moscow Diocese, in an interview with RIA Novosti on August 6.
Foundations of Orthodox Culture is included in the fourth grade school curriculum. Following an analysis of this year’s pilot program a decision will be made about the advisability of further expansion of the course.

12. August 2015 - 9:12This year marks the forty-fifth anniversary of the canonization of the great Russian ascetic missionary to America, St. Herman of Alaska, commemorated on July 27/August 9. Having left his chosen monastic home of the great Valaam Monastery, St. Herman departed under obedience to trek across the entire span of the Russian land to bring the light of Christ to the native peoples of Alaska. He arrived at Spruce Island in 1794 and labored for forty years, caring for all the physical and spiritual needs of the people. His life of prayer and asceticism and intense love in imitation of Christ left an indelible mark on the Alaskan land and people, and his memory has carried throughout the rest of America, and indeed throughout the entire Orthodox world. Under his heavenly protection the American mission continues to grow.

Tsar Nicholas II Bell Established in the Urals - One of Russia's Largest

August 2015 - 11:44The Tsar Nicholas II Bell - which depicts the images of the Holy Royal Martrs - weighing 16.5 tons was installed earlier this week in the bell tower of the Transfiguration Cathedral in St. Nicholas Monastery in Verkhoturye (Sverdlovsk region), a major spiritual center in the Urals. The bell is the third largest in the Archdiocese of Yekaterinburg and one of the twenty largest bells in Russia.
