More than 16,000 antiquities stolen from Turkish-occupied Cyprus, even found in Japan

February 2020 - 15:11More than 16,000 Christian icons, mosaics and murals dating from to 6th and 5th centuries have been forcibly stolen and sold abroad since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, according to the Director of the Office for Combating Illegal Possession and Trafficking of Antiquities, Michalis Gavriilidis.

During the Liturgy, the African students of the Patriarchal School of “Saint Athanasius,” based in the Holy Patriarchal Monastery of St. Savvas the Sanctified, chanted according to the established order and the Alexandrian typical.
EU investigating charges of destruction of mosaics in Turkish-occupied Cyprus

February 2020 - 14:11In response to a written statement by Cypriot Euro-Deputy Costas Mavridis denouncing the deliberate abandonment and destruction of the mosaics of the Church of St. Eulalios in Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus, the relevant European Union commission has already taken up the matter, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.
The commission’s cultural heritage committee has already begun investigating the fate of the mosaics of the church in the Kyrenia district in order to begin preservation work as soon as possible.
