ROCOR to consecrate new bishop for America

Meeting at Danilov Monastery on August 30 under the chairmanship of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church approved a bishop-elect for the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia to serve in America, reports the press service of the Russian Orthodox Church.

In accordance with the Act of Canonical Communion of May 17, 2007, hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia “are selected by its Bishops’ Council or, in cases foreseen by the Regulations of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, by the Synod of Bishops. Such elections are confirmed in accordance with canonical norms by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church.”

Thus, the Synod approved the election of Archimandrite James (Corazza) to serve as Bishop of Sonora, vicar of the Western American Diocese.

The place and time of his consecration will be decided and announced by the hierarchs of ROCOR.

Archimandrite James (Corazza) is the rector of the Old Cathedral of the Holy Virgin “Joy of All Who Sorrow” in San Francisco. He converted to the Orthodox Faith from Lutheranism in 1979 while studying Political Science in college. Fr. James served as a subdeacon and deacon at the Old Cathedral since 1984, and as a priest since 2004. He is well known for hosting tours for pilgrims who travel to San Francisco to venerate St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco.
