Why do we fast? Why do we make sacrifices? Why do we stand at long services? Why do we pray? To those of us who are beginning to doubt and waver after only two weeks of the Fast, the Church brings us an answer today. This answer is in the person of St Gregory Palamas, the fourteenth-century Archbishop of Salonica in Greece to whom this Sunday is dedicated.
The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts
23. March 2016 - 16:05Among the church services held during Lent, the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, performed on Wednesdays and Fridays, holds an important place. During this service the Holy Elements, blessed during the previous Sunday’s Liturgy and saved in the artophorion (gold plated box) are placed on the Holy Table in the middle of the Sanctuary are offered for communion to believers.
