Suggestions of the Serbian Orthodox Church accepted

Minister of Culture Maja Gojkovic: Preserving cultural heritage is the common goal

Vice President of the Government of the Republic of Serbia and Minister of Culture and Information Maja Gojkovic informed today His Holiness Porfirije, Serbian Patriarch, that the work meeting accepted the suggestions and proposals that the Serbian Orthodox Church sent to the Draft Law on Cultural Heritage, in order to improve and enhance the text of the Draft Law.

In the letter to the Patriarch, Gojkovic emphasized that the text to which the remarks and suggestions were submitted is not in the phase of the Draft Law, and thus neither in the procedure of adoption before the Government of the Republic of Serbia, nor before the National Assembly.

The Vise President of the Government indicated that the Working Group within the Ministry of Culture and Information is only now, after holding four panel discussions within the public debate, which lasted from 6 to 28 May, in the phase of considering numerous proposals by the general public, and in order to improve the text of the future Draft Law.

Gojkovic stated that the common goal is the preservation of cultural heritage, and special attention and joint work and commitment are focused on the protection of cultural heritage located on the territory of our Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija, which is exposed to attacks and destruction on a daily basis.

Gojkovic expressed confidence that in the future, as well as now, through strong cooperation we will reach the best solutions for the future Draft Law on Cultural Heritage, which after the adoption of proposals and suggestions will contribute to the overall protection of cultural heritage of the Republic of Serbia, and it will will be one more step in mutual efforts of the state and the Serbian Orthodox Church to preserve the cultural heritage of our state and people for future generations.
