Two thousand visitors to the Sumela Monastery within four days

The Sumela Monastery received two thousand visitors within four days, which opened to the public after four years of restoration work.

Trabzon Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Ali Ayvazoğlu, according to OPEN TV correspondent Maria Zacharaki, said that “2,063 people visited the monastery from Saturday, May 25 to Tuesday May 28. This is a very good number. This means that on average about 600 thousand people will visit the monastery this year. I think we can achieve this number,” he said.

According to the ethnos.gr website, once all the restoration work of the Sumela Monastery has been completed, as only the areas up to the courtyard are now accessible, the procedures for its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List will begin. Restoration work is planned to be completed by 2020.
