Council of Europe: The magnificent beauty of Hagia Sophia transcends religionsHagia Sophia “is one of the most important world heritage sites and a legendary symbol of the interaction between cultures and the coexistence of cultures. The wonderful beauty of Hagia Sophia goes beyond religions”.

These phrases are included in today’s resolution that has been adopted by the relevant Committee on Culture, Science, Education and the Media of the Council of Europe, by a vote of 25 for, 2 against and 2 abstentions.

The resolution for the transformation of this world cultural monument into a mosque was the result of the good work that preceded, by the MPs from Greece and their colleagues from the Republic of Cyprus.

The final resolution adopted by the committee of the Council of Europe stated: “The change of status of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople from a museum to a mosque on July 13, 2020, is indicative of Turkey’s indifference to cultural and religious values. Hagia Sophia is one of the most important world heritage sites and a legendary symbol of the interaction between cultures and the coexistence of cultures.

The wonderful beauty of Hagia Sophia goes beyond religions”. As an architectural masterpiece had a wide influence on both Western and Islamic art. Violation of this unique heritage is reprehensible and unacceptable. It is also a dividing step backwards, which clearly undermines Turkey’s secular identity and multicultural heritage.”

And the resolution concludes: “This decision also runs counter to the core values and principles of the Parliamentary Assembly, in particular as regards interfaith, intercultural dialogue and the principle of coexistence.”
