Holy, Glorious Apostle Thomas

The Holy and Glorious Apostle Thomas was born in the Galilean city of Pansada and was a fisherman. Hearing the good tidings of Jesus Christ, he left all and followed after Him. The Apostle Thomas is included in the number of the holy Twelve Apostles of the Savior.

According to Holy Scripture, the holy Apostle Thomas did not believe the reports of the other disciples about the Resurrection of Jesus Christ: “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into His side, I will not believe” (John 20:25).

On the eighth day after the Resurrection, the Lord appeared to the Apostle Thomas and showed him His wounds. “My Lord and my God,” the Apostle cried out (John 20:28). “Thomas, being once weaker in faith than the other apostles,” says Saint John Chrysostom, “toiled through the grace of God more bravely, more zealously and tirelessly than them all, so that he went preaching over nearly all the earth, not fearing to proclaim the Word of God to savage nations.”

Homily on the feast of the Protection of the Mother of God

O Mother of God, sheltered by Thy coming /
we faithful people today keep feast in joy, /
and looking at Thy most pure image, /
moved to the depths of our hearts, we say: /
Protect us with Thy precious Veil /
and deliver us from every ill, /
by entreating Christ, Thy Son and our God, /
to save our souls.

(Tropar in tone 4 - Protection of the Mother of God)

Early one morning, two sisters were getting ready for school, as one sister walked out of her room with one pillow on her back and one pillow on her chest. Her sister asked, “why do you have pillows on you?” “Well,” she said, “the pillow on my chest is to protect from all the boys that will break my heart. And the pillow on my back is to protect me from all the friends that will stab me in the back."

Saint Kyriakos the Anachorite

Today the Church honours and celebrates the sacred memory of Blessed Kyriakos the Anchorite, who was born in Corinth in 408. His father was called Ioannis and was a priest, while his mother was Evdoxia. The then bishop of Corinth, Petros, who was Kyriakos’ uncle on his father’s side, ordained him reader. But Kyriakos did not find inner peace in Corinth and so, at the age of eighteen, he left for Jerusalem. There were many monasteries there at that time and some great ascetics, among whom he wished to live. His soul took wings and soared with divine love; he was captured and drawn by the eremitic life.

  • The Sacred and Divine Liturgy is a new English edition of the primary divine service of the Orthodox Church, published in full color by St Sebastian Press of the Western American Diocese, and edited by Bishop Maxim.
  • Why do you need to buy this book?
  • This translation is an adapted version of the texts of accurate English translations already existed in previously published service books, and various Greek, English, and Slavonic liturgical manuals.
  • All previously existing translations were checked for accuracy and consistency and edited, when necessary.
  • Modern English has been chosen for this edition, following the most common order to be found in the Greek and Slavonic language service books which reflect the Byzantine tradition.
  • The dialogues between the celebrant and the deacon are also included with brief Rubrics.
  • In the supplementary material a detailed explanation for the Hierarchical Liturgy is included.
  • One notable difference found in this edition from all existing editions is an aesthetic quality: the book is in full color, entirely illustrated by Fr. Stamatis Skliris’ icons and frescos.
