The Cyrillic Day in Atlanta
This event was in honor of the Feast of St. Cyril and Methodius, the two holy brothers who were Byzantine Christian theologians and Christian missionaries to the Slavic people. The Cyrillic Day was organized for the first time on May 21, 2017, here in Atlanta. It took place in the central library for Gwinnett County in Lilburn (the same city where we are building our Serbian church).
Our parish has participated in the organization, with help of the central library manager, Julia Handžieve who made sure that advertising notices were placed in all the libraries in the Gwinnett county. The aim of this "Day of the Cyrillic alphabet" event was to acquaint people with the Slavic culture literacy, Cyrillic script and preservation of our cultural heritage in the Diaspora.
In addition to our Serbian community, Bulgarian, Russian and Ukrainian communities were also involved in the participation of this event. In the cultural-artistic program, representing the Diaspora of Bulgaria, a music group (KUD) Rosa performed, along with a younger dance group, while for the members of the Serbian community, children's folk group "Djurdjevak" performed Serbian songs. All attendees of the program also had a wonderful opportunity to taste some delicacies from our region.
This cultural event was accompanied and recorded by BIT (Bulgarian television). The plan is that next year, at the feast of the St. Cyrill and Methodius, we organize a Cyrillic day event with more participants and even richer program.
