EU leadership intends to face today's challenges together with the continent's religious leaders

The EU leadership stated its intention to establish a strong cooperation with the continent's religious leaders. "Together we will have to meet the challenges faced by our society. This is our common responsibility," the President of the European Commission José Manuel Durão Barroso said at a meeting with representatives of Europe's traditional religions held in Brussels, the official website of the Moscow Patriarchate reports Wednesday.

Barroso reminded that this was the fifth meeting with European religious leaders and it "highlights the emphasis which EU leadership lays on the dialogue with traditional religions."

"Facing the global crisis, we would like to listen to those who in their everyday service communicate with the most affected layers of society," the President said.

In his turn, Commissioner for Education and Culture Jan Figel stated addressing the clergy: "We are attentively listening to you and are ready to work together."
