Pope appoints new bishop for UK diocese of Lancaster

Canon Paul Swarbrick has extensive pastoral experience in the diocese and has served as a missionary in Zambia

Pope Francis has named Canon Paul Swarbrick as the new bishop of the diocese of Lancaster in the north of England. He takes over from Bishop Gregory Campbell who submitted his resignation in October 2016.

Paul Swarbrick was born in Garstang, North Lancashire on July 2nd 1958, one of five children.

He attended St.Mary and Michael’s Primary School and Lancaster Royal Grammar School, before training for the priesthood at Ushaw College, Durham and receiving his priestly ordination in July 1982.

He served in various parishes in the Diocese and then went to work in the diocese of Monze in Zambia from 1990 to 2005.

Since 2010 he has been parish priest of Christ the Good Shepherd in Workington, Cumbria and he also serves as deacon at the parish Our Lady and Saint Benedict in West Cumbria.
