Syriac Aramean Genocide Monument Unveiled in Sweden
A genocide monument honoring the the Syriac Aramaic victims of the genocide instigated by Ottoman Turkey during the World War One was erected 26 april 2015 in Botkyrka, a suburb of 20 km southwest of Stockholm, Sweden.
It is the first Syriac Aramaic memorial in Sweden and one of the first in the world honoring arameans. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Energy Ibrahim Baylan, European Parliamentarian Lars Adaktusson, and Syriac Orthodox archbishop Benjamin Atas.
The Serbian ambassador of Sweden Dr Dušan Crnogorčević among with representatives of the Armenian, Syrian and Lebanese embassies attended.
Both representatives of the orthodox sister churches and catholics attended this historical event.
Between 1915 and 1918 750,000 Syriac Arameans (75%), 500,000 Greeks and 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turks and Kurds in a genocide that aimed at and nearly succeeded in destroying the Christian communities in the Ottoman Empire.
Friday, April 24, marked the centennial anniversary of the genocide. Sweden is home to nearly 100,000 Syriac Arameans. Aramean genocide monuments have been erected in ten cities throughout
