A dozen church painters from European countries seek to revamp ancient practice

With brighter hues and bolder brushstrokes, Orthodox icon painters are looking to breathe new life into the ancient art of depicting saints, angels and biblical scenes, lest its rigid rules see it consigned to history.

A dozen church painters from European countries like Greece and Serbia but also from the United States gathered this month in Romania to experiment with adding modern touches to Byzantine iconography without angering the conservative Orthodox Church. "I don't want to attack them," US painting professor Anthony Salzman said of churchgoers, "but I don't want to bore them either". "Tradition died in the 16th or 17th century, now we are resurrecting it, we are learning what its limits are," he added at the event in Mogosoaia, on the outskirts of Bucharest.

Bishop Atanasije of Hvosno serves in Church of Holy Archangel Gabriel

His Grace Bishop Atanasije of Hvosno served on Sunday, 2 December 2012 the Divine Liturgy in the church of Holy Gabriel the Archangel in Belgrade. On this occasion Bishop Atanasije awarded Primarius Dr. Bogdan Zlatar,retired specialist in internal medicine, with the Order of Saint Sava of the Third Degree. 

Archimandrite Jovan Radosavljevic: Raids and Concentration Camps in Backa during World War Two

In the evening of the feast day of the Renovation of the Church of Saint Greatmartyr George in Lydia which is the Patron Saint’s day of the city of Novi Sad, on 15 November 2012, at the great hall of the Matica Srpska in Novi Sad the book Raids and Concentration Camps in Backa during World War Two, which author is  archimandrite Jovan Radosavljevic, was presented. The book is the latest publication of Beseda (Homily) – the publishing company of the Orthodox Diocese of Backa. His Grace Dr Irinej of Backa, Dr Djordje Srbulovic and the author spoke on the book.

Annual Concert of Choir “Saint Roman Melod” in Kitchener

Last Saturday, on 10 November 2012 , the annual concert of the choir “Saint Roman Melod” at the Holy Trinity Church in Kitchener was held. His Grace Bishop, George of Canada, who blessed this cultural and spiritual gathering, was also present at this concert.

The conference is organized by the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the University of Belgrade, in collaboration with the Orthodox Christian Studies Program of Fordham University.

The Department of Patristic Studies of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the University of Belgrade in Serbia is organizing an International Symposium on Saint Maximus the Confessor in Belgrade, October 18-21, 2012, commemorating the 1350th year since his repose in 662.

The goal of the symposium is to highlight those elements and aspects of Saint Maximus's teaching that are relevant for our time, especially the theological, philosophical, psychological and other questions it raises.

A number of areas present themselves as interesting foci for the conference: theology, anthropology, hermeneutics, philosophy, science, eschatology, human physis, freedom, otherness, person, gender, psychology, biology, cosmology, physics, modern and ancient philosophy.
