160th years of the First Belgrade Chanting Ensamble

In Belgrade’s National Theater the traditional New Year’s concert of the Cathedral church began with Lord’s prayer Our Father and the Serbian anthem  O, God of Justice  - on the occasion of the Patron Saint-day of the First Belgrade Chanting Ensamble – Saint Basil the Great.

Protopresbyter-stavrophor Petar Lukic, dean of the Cathedral church, read the New Year’s Message of Serbian Patriarch Irinej in which His Holiness, among other things, also reminded of all great anniversaries which we marked in 2013 and announced events which, as significant for the Serbian  people, will be marked in 2014: 100th anniversary of the First World War; 200th anniversary of  martyrdom of Deacon Avakum and Abbot Pajsije; 50th anniversary of martyrdom of Bishop Varnava (Nastic) of Hvosno.

Within the musical part of the program there were several guests participating: the Children’s choir of the First Belgrade Chanting Ensamble, choir of the RTS Kolibri, ethno group Bozuri Careva Grada from Krusevac, vocal ensamble White Angel, Bilja Krstic and band Bistrik, Bora Djordjevic, a rock band Neverne Bebe.

Drama artist TanasijeUzunovic read from the Life  of Saint Symeon, while actor Ljubivoje Tadic reminded the audience about the First World War and Dr.  Archibald Reiss. Academician Matija Beckovic recited verses of his poem When I Was Even Younger. Drama artist Haji Petar Bozovic recited excerpts from the Ray of Microcosm by Peter Petrovic Njegosfor the first time on the stage of the National Theater!

The New Year’s traditional concert was attended by His Holiness Irinej, Serbian Patriarch; President of the Republic of Serbia Tomislav Nikolic with his wife Dragica (for the first time since the Second World War a rresident of the Republic was present!), Bishop Andrej of Remesiana, Princess JelisavetaKaradjordjevic, Ambassador of the Russian Federation Aleksandar Chepurin, Ambassador of Belarus Vladimir Cusev, representatives of the Office for Cooperation with Churches and Religious Communities: Director Dr. Mileta Radojevic and deputy minister Bratislav Petkovic, priests and monks, representatives of cultural and public institutions, personalities from the public life.
