Year of the Sword: The Assyrian Christian Genocide, a History

by Joseph Yacoub
Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2016.
Reviewed by Raymond Ibrahim

This important contribution to genocide studies documents how the world’s oldest Christian communities—variously referred to as Chaldeans, Syriacs, and Arameans, but best known as Assyrians—were, along with the Armenians, “victims of the [Ottoman] plan for exterminating Christianity, root and branch,” to quote Lord Bryce in 1920. In fact, as half of the Assyrian population was massacred—going from 600,000 to 300,000 in 1915-18—relative to their numbers, no other Christian group, including the Armenians, suffered as much under the Ottomans.

The Life of St Mardarije of Libertyville and all America

In light of the one hundredth anniversary of the arrival to North America of Saint Mardarije of Libertyville, and his unselfish and energetic preaching of the Word of God on this continent, the Orthodox Christian publisher Orthodox Lighthouse has prepared a narrative of his life intended for the Orthodox youth of America.

The book The Life of Saint Mardarije of Libertyville and all America is offered with the blessing of His Grace Bishop Irinej of Eastern America. Bishop Irinej was extraordinarily joyous when he heard that a book about Saint Mardarije was in preparation. The Serbian text was written by Deacon Jovan Anicic with English translation by Father Aleksa Micich and editions by Bishop Irinej of Eastern America.  Illustrations were the creation of Angeliki Delecha.  This gifted illustrator from Greece succeeded with her array of colors and great precision to fully depict the life of our Saint Mardarije. The book is available in the Serbian and English languages.

To the Glory of God the Father

THE LIVES OF SAINT MARDARIJE OF LIBERTYVILLE AND SAINT SEBASTIAN OF JACKSON
And their selected writings

This book contains the lives of the two new Saints of the Church who were granted to the North American continent through the Serbian Orthodox Church. The main incentive for publishing this hagiographical work comes from the desire to refresh the memory on these Christ-like people. Bishop Mardarije Uskokovic and Arhimandrite Sebastian Dabovich were the best examples of servant leadership (Matthew 20:27-28), in our recent history in the USA.

“It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us (Acts 15:28) that at the priestly Assembly of Hierarchs of the Serbian Orthodox Church, to the glory of God, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, who is glorious in His Saints, and for the spiritual good and overall progress of our local Church and the entire One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church of Christ, to add to the Synaxis of Saints Venerable Archimandrite SEBASTIAN, who glorified God with his life and works and whom the Lord has already glorified through precious signs and the reverence of all people.
