Serbian Patriarch met with Archbishop of Belgrade
7. August 2020 - 8:54His Holiness Iinej, Serbian Patriarch, received His Excellency Stanislav Hocevar, Archbishop of Belgrade, at the Serbian Patriarchate in Belgrade on August 6, 2020.
The reception was attended by Bishop Stefan, of Remesiana, vicar Bishop of the Serbian Patriarch; Revd. Mihael Sokol, Secretary General of the Archbishop of Belgrade; and Deacon Dr. Aleksandar Prascevic, head of the Office of the Serbian Patriarch.
Remembrance Day of all victims and exiled Serbs in the armed operation “Storm” in Croatia
6. August 2020 - 9:49His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Irinej officiated a memorial service for the killed Serbs in the armed operation “Storm” in Croatia in 1995. The memorial service was officiated at Sremska Raca, Serbia, on 4thAugust 2020.
The President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, and the Serbian member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik, unveiled a commemorative plaque on the bridge in Sremska Raca, via which processions of refugees had found refuge in Serbia. The President of Republika Srpska, Mrs Zeljka Cvijanovic, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia Mrs Ana Brnabic, His Grace Bishop Vasilije of Srem and His Grace Fotije of Zvornik-Tuzla, attended the marking of the Day of Remembrance of the perished and exiled Serbs as well.
Metropolitan Porfirije: War is a defeat of all
6. August 2020 - 9:43On the 25th anniversary of the beginning of the military action “Storm”, on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, Metropolitan Porfirije of Zagreb-Ljubljana, served as a memorial service for the innocent victims of the war in the 1990s.
Surrounded by the clergy of the Cathedral in Zagreb, representatives of the Serbian National Council and of the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia and the faithful, Metropolitan Porfirije served an annual memorial service for the victims of the “Storm”, but also in the days immediately following that military action.
Patron Saint Day of the Diocese of Budimlje-Niksic
6. August 2020 - 9:30The historical diocese of Budimlje-Niksic - established by Saint Sava in 1219 - celebrated its patron saint day, the feast of St. Mary Magdalene, on August 4, 2020.
The Holy Hierarchal Liturgy in the monastery of Djurđevi Stupovi, the cathedral monastery of the Diocese of Budimlje-Niksic, was officiated by His Grace Joanikije Bishop with several priests and hieromonks.
Orthodox churches damaged, 100+ killed, 4000+ wounded, over 200,000 homeless after Lebanon explosion
6. August 2020 - 9:24The world was shocked on Tuesday, August 4, when a massive explosion shook the port of Beirut, Lebanon, with now reportedly around one hundred people killed, over four thousand injured; some reports say that more than 200,000 are left homeless, as the shockwave spread through the city breaking glass, and the red mushroom cloud loomed over the port.
With tensions in the region already high, preliminary reports are indicating the explosion was due to “confiscated high explosive materials” being stored in the port, possibly ammonium nitrate. That being said, the cause of the explosion is currently unknown pending an investigation. Orthodox Churches were among the many critically damaged structures.
Church of Greece sent letter of support to Patriarch of Antioch for blast in Beirut
6. August 2020 - 9:11The Holy and Sacred Synod expresses the support of the Church of Greece to Patriarch John of Antioch, in a letter sent by Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens.
In addition, it declares support to the Patriarchate of Antioch and the people of Lebanon “for the relief and healing of our affected brothers and sisters.” They added, “Both we and the charitable Church Organisation ‘Apostoli’ (Mission) are wholeheartedly by your side.” Finally, the Holy Synod stated: “The Church of Greece, the Hierarchy, the clergy, the monks and the faithful, we fervently pray to God for the city of Beirut. Let the Lord give you all the consolation, patience, strength, and hope you need to overcome this unexpected calamity.”
