Funeral procession from Trebinje to Tvrdos and burial of the late Bishop Atanasije

After the Matins, funeral service and the Liturgy, the funeral procession, led by the clergy, carrying the body of the newly departed Bishop Atanasije, set off from the Cathedral church through the central city streets, through Zasad Polje, to the Tvrdos Monastery, where the burial place was prepared.

A funeral procession with thousands of faithful escorted the body of the late Bishop Atanasije from Trebinje to the Tvrdos monastery, laying his burial first in front of the catholicon of this monastery, where a memorial service was held. After that, passing once more through the monastery buildings, the body of Bishop Atanasije was laid in a rock under the chapel of the  Resurrection of Christ and covered with earth, Herzegovinian, of Kosovo-Metohia, of Jasenovac ... After laying the body of Bishop Atanasije, Bishop Joanikije of Budva-Niksic and administrator of the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral addressed the gathered.

Gospel of St. John 6:48-54: “I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die.” If we ask ourselves which gospel words best fit this liturgical commemoration in front of the coffin of the unforgettable Bishop Atanasije, then these are precisely the words of the Lord from today’s Gospel.

Messages of condolence on the occasion of the death of Bishop Atanasije

His Holiness Porfirije, Serbian Patriarch, has received numerous messages of condolence on the occasion of the death of the retired Bishop Atanasije of Zahumlje-Herzegovina.

Letters expressing their condolences to the Patriarch and the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church with prayers for the repose of the soul of the newly departed Bishop Atanasije were sent by Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem and All Palestine, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, Patriarch Neophyte of Bulgaria and Patriarch Daniel of Romania, as well as Metropolitan Silouan of Mount Lebanon and Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk.

Divine Liturgy before the catafalque of Bishop Atanasije

The Divine Liturgy was celebrated in front of the Trebinje Cathedral church from 10 am, after the served Matin and the funeral service of retired Bishop Atanasije of blessed repose.  

The gathering was officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Hrizostom of Dabar-Bosnia, with the concelebration of several bishops who also served during the Matin with the funeral service, and who were joined at the Holy Liturgy by Their Graces Bishops Jovan of Slavonia and Atanasije of Milesevo.

In front of the Cathedral church in Trebinje, this morning from 8.30 am, a funeral service was held for the retired Bishop Atanasije of Zahumlje-Herzegovina of blessed repose.

The gathering was presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Hrizostom of Dabar-Bosnia, with the concelebration of Bishops Justin of Zica, Grigorije of Dusseldorf and Germany, Joanikije of Budva-Niksic and administrator of the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral, Maxim of Western America, Arsenije of Nis, Kiril of Buenos Aires and South-Central America, Metodije of Dioclea  and Dimitrije  of Zahumlje-Herzegovina, as well as numerous priests and faithful people of the Church of God.

His Grace Bishop Irinej of Backa served the memorial service to Bishop Atanasije (Jevtic) of blessed repose at the Episcopal Palace in Novi Sad, on 5 March 2021. 

The Bishop was concelebrated by protopresbyter-staurophor Stojan Bilic and deacon Branko Bandobranski. The memorial service to Bishop Atanasije was attended by closest associates of Bishop of Backa.
