His Beatitude our Father and Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos visited the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Fanar from Tuesday 27th September/10th October to Wednesday 28th September/11th October   2017, escorted by Geronda Secretary General Most Reverend Archbishop Aristarchos of Constantina and Archdeacon Mark.

Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk speaks at international conference on persecution of Christians

On 12 October 2017, an international consultation on “Finding the Appropriate Answers to a Long Neglected Crisis” began its work in Budapest (Hungary). With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations, took part in the opening of the conference.

Orthodox dioceses responding to northern CA wildfires

Wildfires continue to spread quickly throughout northern California’s wine country. Latest reports say 23 people have already been killed, and another 285 are missing. 170,000 acres have been consumed, with 3,500 structures thus far destroyed. More than 20,000 people have been ordered to evacuate, including the city of Calistoga, and parts of Geyserville. At least 8,000 firefighters from California and other western states are bravely and tirelessly working to contain the fires.

Greek Church spent $147 million on charity, social services in 2016

Meeting in its second session of the month yesterday under the presidency of His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens, the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church heard a report detailing that the Church spent more than $147 million on its social welfare and charity ministry works in 2016, Romfea reports.

Orthodoxy growing in Uzbekistan

There are a growing number of Orthodox Christians in Uzbekistan, despite the dwindling of the Russian-speaking population, Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev) of Volokolamsk stated recently.

Speaking on television program “The Church and the World” on Saturday, His Eminence stated, “The Orthodox are not becoming smaller, because there is a very active parallel work being done on the catechetical and religious education of the people. That is, the Russian-speaking population has decreased, but the number of Orthodox is growing anyways,” reports Interfax-Religion.

Eight saints who connect us with Syria

Because of the many centuries of expansion by the Islamic nations, we often think of Syria as a Muslim land, having but an insignificant connection with Christianity that has already disappeared into oblivion. However, this is definitely not the case—there are a multitude of saints to whom, or by whose words Orthodox Christians pray every day all over the world, who are in one way or another bound up with Syria.
