This year, for the Feast of St. Nicholas, His Grace, Bishop Irinej once again increased our joy by visiting our St. Nicholas community.

The festivities began with the Church School St. Nicholas Project, which included our children offering their time and talents as they mounted icons in order to sell in support of Princess Katherine’s LIFELINE charity.  Lifeline is an organization dedicated to easing the suffering of the orphaned children of the recent wars in the lands of former Jugoslavija.

Children’s Day in Philadelphia

On December 17 the children of St. Nicholas in Philadelphia celebrated “detinjci”, Serbian Children’s Day, with a program to St. Nicholas. In the Serbian tradition, the three Sunday's prior to the Feast of the Nativity are dedicated to the family - Children's Day, Mother's Day, and Father's Day.

On these Sundays the person to whom that day is dedicated is “tied up” and must give a gift to be untied. This year's Children's Day began with Divine Liturgy where our families and children partook of Holy Communion. Following service the parents and teachers tied up the children. As their gift to be untied the Children offered a program about Sveti Nikola.

The Winter Youth Retreat was once again a great success.  Over 120 participants (maximum capacity reached and other people were politely being turned away but they were still coming as guests during the day)  gathered at the New Gracanica Monastery to experience and learn more about their faith while enjoying the fellowship of others.  Thanks to the blessing of our bishop Longin and protection of The Mother of God, the participants had the opportunity to attend lectures, discussions, church services and visit the game room that held a variety of activities.  On the first evening, participants met their roommates and lined up for dinner to further get to know each other.   The orientation then educated the participants regarding the schedule and rules for the week.  Everybody introduced themselves individually and then proceeded to the church for an Akathist service.  After the service, participants sat in the circle and had the opportunity to share their most difficult moments of 2017.
