Eminent scholar Olivier Clément died

January 2009 - 9:58Olivier Clément, who has died aged 87, was a French-born Russian Orthodox theologian whose stature was recognised not only by members of other Churches but also by Jews and Muslims. Offering personal proof that it was possible to become Orthodox without going East, he foresaw a Christian future which did not require the Western Church to become Eastern, or vice versa. He worked tirelessly for a mutual respect, which would make possible a recovery of the fullness of truth which would make the Churches one.

Elevation, ordinations, and awards mark Feast of Three Hierarchs
2. February 2009 - 9:37On January 30, 2009, during the celebration of the Feast of the Three Hierarchs, Ss. Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom-the patrons of the St. Vladimir's Seminary campus chapel-two seminarians were ordained and two more received distinctive scholarship awards. Additionally, Protodeacon Kirill Sokolov, Associate Chancellor for Systems at the seminary, was elevated to the rank of Archdeacon by Metropolitan Jonah, primate of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), and now serves as the archdeacon to His Beatitude in addition to his duties at the seminary.
Bishop Mark of Yegoryevsk temporarily appointed as chief of Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations

February 2009 - 9:24Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill has ordered Bishop Mark of Yegoryevsk to temporarily perform the duties of the head of the Moscow Patriarchate Departmet for External Church Relations. The Patriarch announced the decision at a meeting on Wednesday with the staff of the Department, which he had led for almost 20 years prior to being elected as the Patriarch.
