The oldest Serbian Orthodox parish in North America, dedicated to Saint Sava, in Jackson, California, festively celebrated its 125th anniversary during the weekend of 18th-20th of October, 2019.

The commemoration of the jubilee began in the Amador County Public Library, where the parish clergy and parishioners presented several books that constitute the DNA of our community: The Christian Heritage of Kosovo and Metohija, The Serbian Christian Heritage of America, The Lives of Saint Mardarije of Libertyville and Saint Sebastian of Jackson, All Roads Lead to Jackson (on history and importance of the Serbian community in this city and region) and The Icons of Saint Sava Church in Jackson (with the parish history and explanation of frescoes).

A delegation of the Constantinople Patriarchate in Belgrade

His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Irinej received a delegation of the Patriarchate of Constantinople headed by the Most Rev. Metropolitan John of Pergamon. The event took place at the Patriarchal Residence in Belgrade on 25 October 2019.

The delegation of the Patriarchate of Constantinople also consisted of Metropolitans Emmanuel of France, Maximos of Silivri, Amphilochios of Adrianople, and Deputy Secretary of the Holy Synod Grigorios.

His Grace Bishop Jovan of Sumadija celebrated the Holy Hierarchal Liturgy in front of the church of Sts New Martyrs of Kragujevac in Sumarice district on the occasion of 78 years since shooting more than two hundred citizens of Kragujevac by German occupation forces.

In the honor and glory of Sts New Martyrs of Kragujevac, pupils of the Theological Seminary of St. John Chrysostom sang responses. Bishop Jovan blessed slava loaf with Jovan Aleksic, founderr of the Sumarica church. His Grace also served with the clergy and faithful people the acathist to the Holy New Martyrs in front of the V3 monument. The event took place on the 21st October, the day when the school children with their teachers were shot.

His Holiness Irinej, Serbian Patriarch, awarded writer Momir Krsmanovic with the Order of Saint Sava at a solemn reception at the Serbian Patriarchate in Belgrade on 22 October 2019.

The event was attended by members of the Holy Synod of Bishops: His Eminence Metropolitan Hrizostom of Dabar-Bosnia and Their Graces Bishops Irinej of Backa, Jovan of Sumadija and David of Krusevac.

”Serbian Orthodox Church 800 years (1219-2019)”

In commemoration of the 800th Anniversary of the Autocephaly of the Serbian Orthodox Church (1219-2019), His Grace The Right Reverend Irinej, Bishop of Eastern America, The Serbian Orthodox Church, has given his Archpastoral blessings for the Department of Christian Education of the Eastern American Diocese, in cooperation with the Society for the Cultivation of Tradition and Culture of Valjevo, to present a visual-literary exhibit “Serbian Orthodox Church 800 Years (1219-2019)” in all church-school congregations of the God-protected Eastern American Diocese, from November 1st , 2019 until June 14th, 2020.
