There is not a single, public Christian church left in Afghanistan, according to the U.S. State Department.

This reflects the state of religious freedom in that country ten years after the United States first invaded it and overthrew its Islamist Taliban regime.

In the intervening decade, U.S. taxpayers have spent $440 billion to support Afghanistan’s new government and more than 1,700 U.S. military personnel have died serving in that country.

Cyprus to get back rare Orthodox frescoes from US

Rare 13th-century frescoes are to be returned to Cyprus from an American museum where they have been exhibited for the last 28 years, the leader of the divided island's Orthodox Christian church said Friday.

Archbishop Chrysostomos II says the Houston-based Menil Collection agreed to return the Byzantine frescoes early next year on the church's insistence not "to allow them to remain there even for one second longer."

Orthodox Bishops’ Assembly in Switzerland meets for a regular session

The Orthodox Bishops’ Assembly in Switzerland (OBAS) met for a regular session on September 23, 2011, in Chambesy near Geneva, the website of the Diocese of Chersonese has reported. Among the participants was Bishop Nestor of Chersonese, vice-president of the Assembly.

The meeting approved the membership of four advisory commissions of the Assembly and defined their terms of reference. In addition, the Assembly set up a working group to make preparations for the celebrations on the Day of Orthodox Unity to be held for the first time in Switzerland on May 17, 2012.

Bulgarian Iron Church's Restoration in Istanbul

The Istanbul Municipality and the provincial administration have joined efforts to restore the Bulgarian "St. Stefan" church.

According to Hurriyet Daily News, "the parts of the church that have become dirty and carbonated will be cleaned thoroughly with detergent water, while the missing ornaments on the façade will be replicated using original material. The crooked parts of the roof will also be renewed."
