Saint Sava celebration in Clearwater

St. Sava is widely considered as one of the most important figures of Serbian History and is canonized and venerated by the Serbian Orthodox Church as its founder, on January 27. He is the patron saint of Serbian schools and schoolchildren.

An evening of Serbian epic poetry in Arcadia

In the church courtyard of Christ the Savior Serbian Orthodox Church in Arcadia, California a literary evening was held and the promotion of an audio book "Бисерне сузе" by Zeljka Cvijetin Gortinsky. His Grace Bishop Maxim of Western America spoke about Serbian epic poetry and it's place in Serbian cultural heritage, to the sounds of gusle in the background. Also speaking on this topic were Zeljka Cvijetin Gortinsky and Misa Tasic, one of the editors of this audio collection of poems.

Saint Sava Day in Paris

In Paris the feast day of Saint Sava was marked with a series of  celebrations.

With the blessing of Bishop Luke of Western Europe, Archbishop Joseph of Western Europe of the Romanian Orthodox Church officiated the Holy Hierarchal Liturgy at the Cathedral church of Saint Sava of the Diocese of Western Europe on 27 January 2015. Beside the parish choir, also nuns from the monastery Bois-Salair sang responses.

Solemn reception for Prime Minister Vucic at Hofburg Palace

At  Hofburg Palace the solemn reception was prepared in honour of the high state visit of President of the Government of the Republic of Serbia Mr. Aleksandar Vucic on Thursday, 29 January 2015, at 7 p.m.

The host of the reception was Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Austria Mr. Sebastian Kurz. His Grace Bishop Andrej of Austria-Switzerland, along with the clergy of the city of Vienna, also participated in the reception. Among attendes there were also: a lot of famous people from the public, cultural and political life of the Republic of Austria and the Republic of Serbia, representatives of the diplomatic corps, eminent public representatives of the Serbian diaspora in Austria and other high guests.

Saint Sava Day in Lackawanna

On Sunday, January 25, the Saint Stephen Church in Lackawanna, NY combined two slava celebrations. They celebrated the Patron of their temple, Saint Stephen the First Martyr, as well as the patron of the church school, Saint Sava. The Divine Liturgy was concelebrated by Fr. Stephen Gousios and Fr. Rastko Trbuhovich.

Saint Sava in Cincinnati

On Sunday, January 25, 2015, parishioners of Saint George Serbian Church gathered to commemorate one of the most important and significant saints of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Saint Sava. This very important celebration reminds Orthodox Christians, and especially Serbian people, of the tremendous impact Saint Sava has on our lives. Saint Sava, who was born Ratsko Nemanjic in 1174, was a Serbian prince, first Archbishop of Serbia, and one of the most influential figures in Serbian law and literature. He left a life of royalty to become a monk in his youth; he influenced his father, Saint Simeon, to do the same, and subsequently founded Monastery Hilander on Mount Athos, which is still to this day one of the most revered cultural and religious centers for Serbian people. Saint Sava is surely one of the most historically and culturally significant saints in the Serbian Orthodox Church. I grew up understanding that Saint Sava was the patron saint of all Serbian people, and especially, Serbian children. Celebrations on this day give Serbian people the great opportunity to express their attachment to the Fatherland, wherever they may live throughout the world, and to remember the example our beloved Saint Sava has given us in regards to how to live our lives according to the Orthodox faith.
