This distant South American country, which bears the name of Christopher Columbus, the man who discovered America, got its Orthodox missionaries in recent years.

His Eminence Amfilohije, Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral and the Administrator of South-Central America, paying a canonical visitation to this Diocese,arrived to the monastery of Holy Trinity in Guatemala on 5 November 2017.

His Eminence was welcomed by abbess of the monastery mother Ines with the sisterhood, protopresbiter-staurophor Alexios Pena Alfaro, Bishop’s deputy of Brazil as well as by monastery spiritual Fr. Ignatius.

On 30 November 2017 His Eminence Amfilohije, Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral and the Administrator of South-Central America, escorted by parish priest Esteban Jovanovic and protodeacon Vladimir Jaramaz, upon the invitation of Metropolitan Silouan of Buenos Aires, visited his Cathedral church of Saint George and the seat of the Diocese of the Church of Antioch in Buenos Aires.

Restoring Hope, History, and Future

The Gala fundraising dinner that was held on Saturday November 4th, 2017, more than one year after the tragic fire, which defaced Saint Sava Cathedral, was a very successful and uplifting event. Among the three hundred attendees were church leaders, royal family members and caring Serbian and non-Serbian friends, who, by coming to offer their moral and material support, made this evening truly special.

Inscribed in 2017 (12.COM) on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

Kolo is a traditional, collective folk dance performed by dancers who are interlinked to form a chain, usually moving in a circular line holding hands with their arms down. It is performed to the accompaniment of music at private and public gatherings and involves all members of the local community. Cultural-artistic societies and folk dance troupes are also important bearers and practitioners of the element. Kolo has an important integrative social function, fostering collective identities at different levels in the communities. It is a symbol of national identity and bears the hallmark of local and regional communal identities.

The feast day of Saint Sebastian of Jackson and San Francisco, an Equal-to-the-Apostles Enlightener of America, was triumphantly celebrated in the Saint Sava Church in Jackson, California, on the 30th/17th of November, 2017.

The first US-born Orthodox Christian monk and priest, together with the Serbian miners who had come from Herzegovina and the Bay of Kotor, founded this small but beautiful church in the peaceful capital of the Amador county in 1894, as the first Orthodox Christian church built by the Serbian immigrants on this continent.
